About NorthCAT

The Northern California Center for Alternative Transportation Fuels and Advanced Vehicle Technologies (NorthCAT) is a new resource available to Northern California. The project, initially funded by the California Energy Commission and partner match fund sources, creates a physical and virtual network of training and showcase centers and informational resources for alternative fuels and vehicle technologies.

NorthCAT is a team of expert groups working to lighten the load on our planet by accelerating the adoption of clean vehicles and advanced fuels

The NorthCAT team is committed to providing informational resources and learning opportunities for fleet managers, city and local officials, first and second responders, electricians and tradespeople, and other interested groups. The center emphasizes advanced technology options with energy use and environmental benefits, including electricity, hydrogen, biofuels, natural gas, electric-drive, hybrid, and advanced combustion vehicles.

New EV Charger Selection Guide!

This Electric Vehicle Charger Selection Guide was funded under multiple grants from the California Energy Commission (CEC). The goal of this guide is to help site hosts and others learn about, evaluate and compare the features of EV charging equipment (available as of March, 2017) to assist them in selecting a charger for their application. 

The guide provides an overview of Electric Vehicle Charger (EVC) equipment, how it works, and considerations when making a purchase. This includes a table of EVC features available from a variety of commercially available products in the United States. Information on EVC features was collected by sending specification sheets of predetermined criteria to EVC manufacturers with a request for an email response with completed specifications for currently available AC charger models. Additional information, including that for DC fast chargers, was collected using publically available technical specifications. As funding allows, the information in this guide will be updated periodically to include new models and specifications as product offerings evolve.

The guide helps to answer key questions to make the EV charger installation decision easier: 

1. What type of charging do you want to provide? 

2. Do you want a networked charger or a stand-alone charger? 

3. Do you wish to require payment for access to EV chargers?  What costs of ownership are you willing to incur? 


Types of EV Charging 

Chargers are generally classified in terms of the power they can provide, designated as “levels”: 

 Level 1 AC charging uses a standard 120 volt AC electric circuit. 

 Level 2 AC charging uses a 208/240 volt AC electric circuit. 

 Direct-current fast charger (DCFC), sometimes referred to as a Level 3 DC charging, uses a 3-phase 480 volt AC electric circuit but delivers direct current (DC) to the vehicle.
