Lightning Systems Announces Fuel Cell-Battery Electric Shuttle Van

LOVELAND, Colo., Feb. 8, 2018 – Lightning Systems, a global developer of efficiency and emissions improvement solutions for fleets, today announced that its new LightningElectric zero-emissions package for the Ford Transit 350HD has been approved for the New York Truck-Voucher Incentive Program (NYT-VIP).

In partnership with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), New York State Department of Transportation, New York City Department of Transportation and CALSTART, NYT-VIP provides $19 million in incentives for clean vehicle technologies. The goal of the program is to promote clean air and a sustainable future for New York’s transportation system by accelerating the integration of advanced vehicle technologies in the commercial truck and bus sectors. More information about the program can be found on their website:

“The New York Truck-Voucher Incentive Program covers up to 80 percent of the incremental cost of eligible clean vehicles such as our zero-emission Ford Transit,” said Tim Reeser, CEO of Lightning Systems. “Incentives like New York’s enable delivery and shuttle fleets to add cutting edge vehicles that will reduce or eliminate emissions at this critical time in the electric vehicle market.”

The LightningElectric battery conversion package is available for Ford Transit as part of Ford Motor Company’s eQVM program. The product is available on heavy-duty Transits with a 10,360-pound gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR). Installation and service are performed by Ford QVM partners and dealers.

“The new LightningElectric Ford Transit EV is an excellent choice for commercial and government fleets that need a zero-emissions product that sends an important message about fleet sustainability,” Reeser added. “It is a durable, proven, and highly configurable commercial vehicle that gets the job done with no compromises.”

Deliveries of the new LightningElectric begin in March. Vouchers and grants are available in a variety of regions like New York for zero-emissions vehicles.

Ford’s vehicle warranty covers the base chassis for vehicles with the LightningElectric upfit, and Ford Motor Credit financing is available.

Featuring a state-of-the-art, liquid-cooled Lithium-Ion battery system from a volume-ready world-class battery supplier, LightningElectric will accommodate full charging in less than thirty minutes for DC Fast Charging. LightningElectric has a payload capacity of up to 4,000 pounds, depending on battery option and drive cycle.

In early 2017, Ford named Lightning Systems one of the first to achieve eQVM status (Advanced Fuel Qualified Vehicle Modifiers) for its LightningHybrid system, a hydraulic hybrid energy recovery system that offers 50 percent NOx reductions and up to 25 percent fuel savings for urban drive cycles. That product also is covered by the NYT-VIP. Applications for LightningHybrid include delivery trucks, shuttle and paratransit buses, refuse trucks, and rear-engine transit buses. The system is available now, worldwide on more than 25 platforms.

Both the LightningElectric and LightningHybrid systems will be qualified by Ford’s eQVM program. The program helps fleet and commercial customers meet their unique and specific needs for durable, reliable advanced technology work trucks that retain the original powertrain warranty and utilize Ford’s vast dealer service network.

Lightning Systems, formerly known as Lightning Hybrids, is a fast-growing, global fleet solutions company with headquarters in Loveland, Colo. A variety of new Lightning Systems’ efficiency and emissions improvement innovations, including a fleet-tracking analytics system called LightningAnalytics, are being introduced in 2018 and 2019 to support commercial and government fleets.
